"Late teens, early twenties: these are the years of self-discovery. During social or political strife, the journey becomes even more cumbersome and demanding. Economic advantage or the gift of intelligence has little effect without character and just plain guts. Wendy Teller takes us on this journey in the person of Mia and her experiences in the 1960s. Radcliffe, the crème de la crème of college experiences, can be daunting even for those with all the advantages, yet Mia masters the hurdles one by one. Becoming Mia is a pleasant walk-through of social change and history, as Mia spends her freshman year in college, each chapter like a scene in a play leading to the wrap-up at the end, cheering Mia on."

  • The author of this debut novel has set herself a challenging task to portray the multi-year, halting progression of a young woman toward finding out who she is, what she wants, and what she needs – and to start this journey in 1964. Many or most young women entering college at that time had a mindset rather alien to today’s readers. Mia is somewhat less conventional and significantly more ambitious than such young women were expected to be, but she starts out a good long way from assertive, and reactive more than proactive. The reader may be torn between being frustrated on her behalf and simply frustrated with her.

As Teller indicates in the interview on the book’s page, the book has many autobiographical elements. It can be difficult, especially in a first novel, to write from one’s life and still build an effective fictional narrative. I found the pacing somewhat uneven, though this became less of a problem in the later chapters.

Several of the secondary characters are nicely drawn, escaping the stereotypes in which they initially seem to fit.

The book effectively captures the tumultuous and quickly changing era, as well as the two-steps-forward-one-step-back nature of a young person’s personal growth. I became progressively more interested in Mia’s life and more eager to see what choices she would make.
  • I liked this book a great deal. It’s a coming-of-age novel, taking place in the 1960’s. Through her experiences as an undergraduate at Harvard, and later a graduate student at UC Berkeley, we see the title-character (Mia) evolve as she deals with emerging social issues of the 1960’s - e.g. the Vietnam war and the protests against it, women in academia (particularly in math and sciences). Overlaying it all is the story of her relationships with her fellow students, particularly two young men with whom she becomes romantically involved. I found the novel’s characters complex and interesting; and the plot is compelling.

  • I was immediately drawn into the story and finished it in 2 days. I like Teller's writing style, character development and story line. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading any future books from this author.
  • This book captures the experiences of a very smart young woman trying to navigate the academic, social and political challenges of college life during the turmoil of the 1960s. It is thought provoking and at the same time it is a love story, which grabs the attention of the reader from beginning to end. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!
  • I loved this book! I grew up in the 60's and enjoy reading about those times. I was hooked from the beginning. The author's way of writing really puts you in the place, and I love getting lost in a book! I absolutely recommend "Becoming Mia" and anxiously await this author's next novel!!
  • Becoming Mia was a bittersweet experience for me. Wendy Teller's story covers exactly the time frame and experiences when I was Becoming Me. Teller has a captured the sense and flavor of those turbulent times with grace and honesty. Her characters are truly drawn, her description of the times and issues, the ignorance of youth and awareness of the academic experience are brilliantly handled. This woman can write! If I had not experienced much of what the people in this story experienced, it would still have been a rich introduction to a time with great historical importance and impact which resonates in today's world. The issues of beauty and clarity were deftly handled. Mathematics and design - wow. My husband has his PhD in mathematics and I watched the struggle for new and creative insights unfold. Teller nailed it. The introduction of the issues of communism, infiltration, and true patriotic honesty were presented without apology and in a context of honest human conflict. None of this would matter if Wendy Teller hadn't been a consummate story teller. Well done!
  • I couldn’t put this book down after the first few pages. The internal conflicts of Mia is so well depicted that I empathize so much with her journey of self-discovery. My favorite part was when her architect/ drawing professor asked her to draw from the heart rather than trying to be rational about it. It’s part of young Mia finding who she is and what she wants. I highly recommend this book and I look forward to the publishing of the next one!
